The Elbow Room on Curtain Road was named Hackney's 'Best Bar None' 2007 at an awards ceremony held at Shoreditch Town Hall. General manager Michelle Ablett said: "I'm really pleased that all our work to make the bar a great place for people to come out to has been recognised like this, it's bound to be good for business! We understand how important it is to make sure the venue is safe for our customers and local residents.
"It's excellent that the council and police have taken the initiative by adopting and developing Best Bar None. I hope a lot more bars, pubs and clubs get involved next year."
Also awarded for creating vibrant, safe and enjoyable nightspots were the licensees of Catch and Strongroom. Catch on Kingsland Road took the silver position and Strongroom on Curtain Road received the bronze award. Catch's approach to tackling crime and disorder and the Strongroom's commitment to public safety and community engagement was commended by the judges.
Four premises were awarded Best Bar None accreditation: Anda de Bridge on Kingsland Road; Reliance in Old Street, Hoxton Square Bar and Kitchen and Electricity Showrooms both in Hoxton Square.
We are delighted to announce that the Hackney Best Bar None Awards Ceremony will take place from 7.00pm – 9.00pm on Monday 28 January 2008 at Shoreditch Town Hall, 380 Old Street, London EC1V 9LT
On the night we will award gold, silver and bronze accolades to the best performing premises as well as rewarding all accredited premises with a certificate. There will be guest speakers, a chance to meet other licensees and hear more about the Hackney Best Bar None Award scheme.
The 2007 Hackney Best Bar None Awards Scheme was launched this week in the Elbow Room, Shoreditch.
Councillor Alan Laing, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, Borough Commander Chief Superintendent Steve Dann, and Inspector Liam Harrington from the Shoreditch Safer Neighbourhood Team each urged licensees from the Haggerston Ward to apply to the scheme.
Cllr Laing said: "Those of us who work and live in Hackney are already aware of what a fantastic, vibrant place it is to go out in. Knowing that it is a safe place to socialise in and get home from is vital, especially for people coming from outside the borough. That is why it's really important that licensees join with the police and council and get involved in this scheme. We all want the same thing – a safe thriving night time, so we shall continue to work together to achieve that aim."
Cllr Guy Nicholson, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and the 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games also encouraged licensees to get involved in the Best Bar None scheme. Cllr Nicholson highlighted the opportunities the Games will bring to local businesses and entrepreneurs in the borough, over the next few years
Hackney Best Bar None will be launched at Elbow Room, last year's silver award winner. Speaking earlier, Council lead officer, Shalini Balakrishnan said "This year's awards will be bigger than before with more eligible premises invited to participate."
The scheme will be launched at The Elbow Room, 97-113 Curtain Road, EC2A 3BS on Monday 22 October 2007 at 5pm.
