The Elbow Room on Curtain Road took the coveted Gold Award at a prestigious ceremony held at Shoreditch Town Hall, Old Street. Cllr Alan Laing, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods opened the evening and said: "Shoreditch is very important to our visitor and night time economy and it's fantastic to see so many licensees taking part in this scheme. I hope the uptake is even greater next year and that eventually Best Bar None will be seen as a sign of excellence for nightspots across the borough."
Borough Commander, Chief Superintendent Steve Dann also thanked everyone for taking the time to enter the awards and said: "This is a really important scheme for the police and local authority. We want to work with licensees to reduce fear of crime and create an environment which brings even more visitors into the area."
Before the winners were revealed Cllr Guy Nicholson, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and the 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games outlined the opportunities the Games will bring to local businesses and entrepreneurs in the borough and how Best Bar None would help the licensed trade prepare for 2012.
John McNamara, Chief Executive of the British Institute of Innkeepers, described himself as "a firm believer in Best Bar None" and said: "Best Bar None should be recognised as a national standard" before presenting the awards.
